Driving at night can be exhausting, especially when bright headlights from cars behind you create glare and reduce visibility. But many drivers don’t realize their vehicle already includes a simple built-in feature designed to solve this exact problem.

The small tab or button located beneath many  rearview mirrors can instantly reduce glare from  headlights behind you, making nighttime  driving safer and more comfortable. Automotive experts often refer to it as the “night mode” or “anti-glare” feature.

Older vehicles typically use a manual lever attached to the bottom of the mirror. Flipping the tab changes the mirror’s angle and switches to a dimmer reflective surface that reduces the intensity of bright lights from vehicles behind you. Newer cars may include auto-dimming mirrors that adjust automatically using light sensors.

Experts say the feature has become even more important with the rise of modern LED  headlights, which many drivers find significantly brighter than older  halogen lights. Large  SUVs and trucks can also create additional glare because their headlights sit higher off the ground.

In addition to the rearview mirror switch, many vehicles also include dashboard dimmer controls that help reduce eye strain during nighttime driving. Lowering dashboard brightness can improve night vision by preventing overly bright instrument panels from distracting the driver.

Drivers can also improve nighttime visibility by using headlights correctly. Low beams are recommended for normal nighttime  driving and poor weather conditions, while high beams should only be used on dark roads with no nearby traffic.

The hidden anti-glare mirror feature recently gained attention online after viral social media videos showed drivers discovering the function for the first time. Many longtime motorists admitted they had no idea the button existed despite driving for years.

While the feature may seem minor, experts say it can significantly reduce eye fatigue and improve comfort during long nighttime drives — especially on busy highways where bright headlights are increasingly common.
