Ingredients
For the Cake
- 1 box (18.25 oz) German chocolate cake mix
- 3 large eggs
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup whole milk
For the Caramel Filling
- 1 (11 oz) bag caramel bits
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted
- ½ cup evaporated milk
- 2 cups chopped pecans, toasted
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
For the Topping
- 1 (16 oz) container chocolate fudge frosting
- Extra chopped pecans (optional)
- Extra chocolate chips (optional)
- Caramel sauce for drizzling (optional)
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, eggs, oil, and milk until smooth. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes.
While the cake is baking, combine the caramel bits, melted butter, and evaporated milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the caramel is completely melted and smooth. Remove from the heat and stir in the toasted pecans and chocolate chips.
Carefully spread the warm caramel mixture over the partially baked cake. Spoon the remaining cake batter over the caramel layer and gently spread it to cover as much as possible.
Bake for another 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cake is set and a toothpick inserted near the edge comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely.
Spread the chocolate fudge frosting over the cooled cake. Sprinkle with extra pecans and chocolate chips, then drizzle with caramel sauce if desired before slicing and serving.
