When temperatures don't drop in the evening, it's hard to get a good night's sleep without a refreshing breeze. Many people then leave their air conditioning running all night. But when the bill arrives, the question stings: how much does this nighttime comfort really cost? Spoiler alert: the bill can quickly add up… unless you know a few simple tricks!
Coolness that comes at a price… down to the kilowatt.
Air conditioning has become an almost indispensable comfort during periods of extreme heat. However, it's not without consequences for your electricity consumption. On average, a domestic air conditioner (wall-mounted split or portable monobloc) uses between 1.5 and 2.5 kWh per hour. This depends, of course, on the unit's power, the outside temperature, the insulation of your home, and even… the size of your bedroom.
A quick calculation? With an average price of €0.20 per kWh in 2025:
For 2 kWh, expect to pay around €0.40 per hour.
Over an 8-hour night, this rises to approximately €3.20.
And if you leave the air conditioning running 24/7? That can reach €9.60 per day, or nearly €70 per week!
Needless to say, over the course of a summer, the bill can quickly become quite unpleasant…
Smart air conditioning: consume less energy without suffocating the system
Fortunately, there are very simple ways to keep cool without breaking the bank:
Recent models with an A++ or A+++ energy label consume up to 40% less than older air conditioners.
Choosing the right size unit:
An air conditioner that's too powerful for a small room will waste energy. Conversely, an undersized model will run continuously. The best compromise? A unit that's appropriate for the room's size and insulation.
Set the temperature moderately:
According to Ademe, a temperature of 26°C is perfectly adequate for comfortable sleeping. And be aware: the greater the difference between the outside and inside temperatures (above 7°C), the higher the energy consumption.
Use the "eco" or "night" mode:
These functions allow the device to adjust its power. The result? Less noise and up to 30% energy savings!
What if we also took advantage of natural coolness?
Even before turning on the air conditioning, a few simple actions can make all the difference:
Ventilate early in the morning or late in the evening, when the air is cooler. Then close everything, including the shutters, to keep that coolness inside.
Insulate your windows and attic if you haven't already. Good insulation not only reduces heat in the summer, but also heat loss in the winter. A double benefit, summer and winter.
Maintain your appliance: A clogged filter or a poorly adjusted system can consume far more energy than necessary. Regular cleaning is often enough to optimize its performance.
Restful sleep is precious… even more so when it doesn't cost a fortune.
