PART 1

For thirty-five years, my husband and I shared the same drink every night. Years later, I had the bottle analyzed, and the result completely surprised me…

For thirty-five years, my husband Victor placed two small glasses on the kitchen table every night, precisely at nine o'clock.

One for him and one for me.

He would always take the bottle he kept on the highest shelf of the cupboard, pour the dark liquid himself, and wait until I finished my glass.

"A toast to celebrate another day we've spent together," he always said.

When we were newlyweds, I even thought it was a romantic custom. I thought Victor simply wanted us to spend a few minutes alone at the end of each day.

Over the years, this custom has become an important part of our routine.

It didn't matter if she was tired, had had a difficult day, or preferred something else. Victor always prepared both glasses.

"Tonight I'd prefer something else," I told him one day.

It's just our little ritual.

Why is this so important to you?

Victor smiled.

Because I like sharing this moment with you.

Finally, I sat down next to him.

The drink had a very distinctive aroma and a rather bitter taste. Sometimes it left a strange sensation in the throat and, at other times, a slight metallic aftertaste.

The strangest thing is that Victor never offered this to our guests.
When we had visitors, the bottle remained stored in the cupboard.

One day, when our daughter Emily was sixteen, she walked into the kitchen and saw the bottle.

"What's inside?" he asked, curious.

Victor took it and smiled.

—It's a special family recipe. I'll tell you the story someday.

Emily shrugged and went back to her room.

I, however, continued to reflect on his words.

Years have passed, but our nightly tradition has never changed.

PART 2

Once a month, Victor received a small package in the mail.

He kept it carefully and, a short time later, a new bottle, without a label, appeared in the cupboard.

Whenever I asked him where he came from, he would reply that he was from an old acquaintance.

When I suggested asking him for the recipe, Victor would simply smile.

One day I'll tell you everything.

One night, I decided to put my glass down.

When Victor left the kitchen for a few minutes, I put the drink away.

The following morning, I noticed that one of the nearby plants didn't look as vibrant as it had the day before.

I was surprised and spent part of the day thinking about what could have happened.

I remembered all those years and started asking myself questions.

Why was that drink so special?

Why did Victor always keep it in the same place?

And why has he never spoken about his origins?

Victor, for his part, remained the same caring man he always was.

When I was having a tough day, he would help me.

When she was tired, she prepared dinner.

Whenever Emily needed something, he was always there for her.

That's why I found it even more curious that he kept this little tradition a secret.

A few weeks later, I put the glass aside again.

The next morning, Victor looked at me and asked:

—You didn't finish your drink yesterday.

How do you know?

She smiled.

—We've been sitting together at this same time for thirty-five years.

That answer only increased my curiosity.

From then on, I started thinking frequently about the story of that bottle.

Until our thirty-fifth wedding anniversary arrived.

Victor picked up an old photo album.

We spent the afternoon reminiscing about some of the best moments of our lives together.

Finally, he pointed to the bottle and said:

One day you will know why this little tradition has been so important to me.

—And why don't you tell me now?

Victor smiled.

It's not the right time yet.

Months later, Victor was no longer at home.

PART 3

The house seemed different and much quieter.

One night, at exactly nine o'clock, I prepared two glasses out of habit.

So I just stared at them for a few minutes.

The next morning, I picked up the old bottle and decided to finally find out what was behind that tradition.

I took the sample to a laboratory to determine its exact composition.

A few days later, I received a call.
"Mrs. Carter, we would like to explain the results to you in person."

Emily came with me.

The specialist greeted us and placed several documents on the table.

Do you know how long this has been part of your routine?

—For about thirty-five years.

The expert nodded.

Then I think you'll find it interesting to learn about her story.

Read the rest in the comments.

The results showed something completely different from what I had imagined.

That drink was not simply a traditional drink.

It was a special preparation that Victor chose with the help of a professional to become part of my daily routine.

The expert also showed me some old documents.

My maiden name appeared on them.

I discovered that, during the first years of our marriage, I received an important recommendation related to taking care of my well-being.

At that moment, I didn't want to give the matter much attention and I put those documents away.

Over the years, the memories of that time became more distant.

Victor, however, never forgot them.

He sought professional guidance and, for many years, provided me with the preparation that should have been part of my routine.

I put everything in a simple bottle so that it would seem like a normal part of our daily lives.

Then, the specialist handed me a letter that Victor had left behind.

"Dear:

You once told me that you wanted to enjoy each day without having to constantly think about complicated issues.

That's why I turned her routine into our little nightly tradition.

My glass contained only my favorite bitter fruit juice.

I brought this with you so that you would never feel alone doing anything.

I apologize for insisting so much on maintaining our little custom.

Maybe one day you'll understand why this meant so much to me.

I just wanted you to be able to enjoy a long and peaceful life.

I held the letter in my hands for a few moments.

For thirty-five years, I thought Victor simply had a strange habit that he never wanted to explain.

Now he understood that, for him, that small tradition meant much more.

It was a way to share a special moment with me every night.

Since then, when it's nine o'clock, I sometimes put two glasses back on the table.

One of them contains my usual preparation.

The other was the bitter fruit juice that Victor enjoyed so much.

I raise my glass towards the empty chair and say:

—A toast to another day and to the thirty-five years we've shared.
