PART 2 — The Federal Agents Walked Through the Front Door Before Anyone Could Wipe the Smiles Off Their Faces
The smile disappeared from Julian’s face.
“What did you just say?” he asked.
I slowly pushed myself into a sitting position, ignoring the burning pain in my side.
“I said…” I looked directly into his eyes. “…you never really knew your wife.”
Arthur let out a sharp laugh.
“Oh, spare us the melodrama. Someone call a doctor before she hurts herself pretending to be a victim.”
Several guests shifted uncomfortably, but nobody stepped forward to help me.
Not one.
They had spent years fearing Arthur Vance more than respecting what was right.
Then—
The estate’s front door burst open.
“Federal agents!”
The commanding voice echoed through the ballroom.
“Nobody move!”
Within seconds, more than a dozen agents wearing dark jackets flooded into the mansion.
The room exploded into panic.
“What is this?”
“There must be some mistake!”
“Arthur!”
Champagne glasses crashed against the marble floor as guests stumbled backward.
Arthur’s confident smile vanished.
“What is the meaning of this?” he demanded.
The lead agent calmly removed a folded document.
“Arthur Vance?”
“I am.”
“You are under federal investigation for securities fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, wire fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice.”
The color drained from Arthur’s face.
“This is outrageous.”
Beatrice stepped forward.
“My husband knows senators. He’ll have every one of you fired.”
The agent barely looked at her.
“Ma’am, threatening federal officers is not advisable.”
Another team immediately separated Arthur from his attorneys and business associates who had been attending the baby shower.
Phones began disappearing into evidence bags.
Laptop computers.
Tablets.
Hard drives.
Even Arthur’s personal assistant had tears in her eyes as agents escorted her aside for questioning.
Julian stared in complete disbelief.
“Dad…”
Arthur turned toward him.
“Call Richard.”
“Our attorney?”
“Now!”
Julian reached into his pocket.
An agent immediately stopped him.
“I’m sorry, sir.”
Julian frowned.
“You can’t stop me from calling my lawyer.”
“You may call an attorney.”
The agent held out his hand.
“After we seize your phone.”
“My phone?”
“It is listed in the warrant.”
Julian froze.
“What?”
Another investigator stepped forward carrying several folders.
“Julian Vance, your financial records indicate you approved multiple transfers through three shell corporations owned by your father’s holding company.”
“I don’t know anything about shell companies.”
“We’ll discuss that downtown.”
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Chloe slowly loosened her grip on Julian’s arm.
“What does this have to do with us?” she whispered nervously.
One female agent looked toward her.
“Chloe Sanders?”
“Y-yes.”
“We’ll also need to speak with you.”
“Why?”
“You received over three million dollars in transfers disguised as consulting payments over the past eighteen months.”
Chloe’s entire body stiffened.
“I… I never asked where the money came from.”
The agent’s expression remained unchanged.
“That may become relevant later.”
She burst into tears.
Julian rounded on his father.
“Dad!”
Arthur glared back.
“Keep your mouth shut.”
Guests began whispering.
“Three million dollars?”
“Money laundering?”
“I knew something wasn’t right.”
Several quietly slipped toward the exits before investigators redirected them back inside for questioning.
Meanwhile…
Nobody had noticed me.
I remained seated beside the destroyed gift table, one hand still protecting my stomach.
The lead female agent finally approached.
“Mrs. Vance?”
I nodded.
“Can you stand?”
“I think so.”
She offered her hand.
Unlike everyone else in the room…
She actually helped me.
As I rose, another sharp pain shot through my abdomen.
I inhaled sharply.
The agent noticed immediately.
“You’re bleeding.”
I looked down.
A small crimson stain had begun spreading across the pale blue fabric of my dress.
Julian saw it too.
His eyes widened.
“Clara…”
For the first time all afternoon…
He sounded frightened.
“You need a hospital.”
I looked at him quietly.
“Now you care?”
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.”
I interrupted him.
“You meant exactly what you said.”
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t know you’d fall that hard.”
“No.”
I repeated.
“You didn’t care.”
The silence hurt him more than any scream ever could.
The paramedics arrived only minutes later.
As they examined me, one medic looked up seriously.
“We’re transporting her immediately.”
Arthur attempted to step forward.
“I’m her father-in-law.”
“No, sir.”
An agent blocked his path.
“You’re a suspect.”
For the first time in decades…
Arthur Vance was powerless.
As they wheeled me toward the ambulance, I caught sight of Beatrice standing perfectly still.
The elegant woman who had applauded while I lay on the floor now looked as though the entire world had collapsed beneath her.
She whispered only one sentence.
“You did this.”
I met her eyes.
“No.”
I answered calmly.
“You did.”
The ambulance doors closed.
Inside, the medic monitored my baby’s heartbeat.
Every second felt endless.
“Come on, sweetheart,” I whispered to my unborn son.
“Stay with Mommy.”
The heartbeat echoed through the monitor.
Strong.
Steady.
I closed my eyes in relief.
My phone vibrated.
The screen displayed a single message from Special Agent Naomi Brooks.
Operation completed. Primary targets secured. Thank you for your courage.
I stared at those words for several long seconds.
Fourteen months.
Fourteen months pretending not to notice Arthur’s conversations.
Fourteen months secretly copying invoices after everyone had gone to sleep.
Fourteen months attending charity galas while wearing a hidden recorder beneath my evening dresses.
Every fake charity.
Every offshore account.
Every bribe.
Every forged signature.
Everything had finally mattered.
The medic interrupted my thoughts.
“There’s someone following the ambulance.”
I looked through the rear window.
A black luxury SUV.
Julian.
He had somehow convinced someone to drive him.
His face looked nothing like the arrogant man from an hour earlier.
He looked terrified.
Desperate.
Broken.
As the ambulance pulled into the hospital entrance, Julian jumped from the SUV before it had fully stopped.
He ran toward the stretcher.
“Clara!”
Security immediately intercepted him.
“Sir, you need to step back.”
He ignored them.
“Please!”
His voice echoed across the emergency entrance.
“I have to talk to my wife!”
I slowly turned my head toward him.
For years…
I had begged this man to choose our marriage.
To choose honesty.
To choose me.
Now…
For the very first time…
He was the one begging.
And I had absolutely nothing left to say.
