PART 2 — THE SECRET MY FATHER BURIED FOR YEARS

I stood frozen beside Sarah’s hospital bed, unable to understand the words that had just left her mouth.

“That little boy… he isn’t mine.”

The heart monitor continued beeping rapidly.

Once.

Twice.

Again and again.

But the sound I heard louder than anything else was my own heartbeat.

I looked through the glass wall of the ICU room.

David was standing outside, gently rocking the feverish baby in his arms. His face was exhausted, his clothes were wrinkled, and he looked like a man who had spent years carrying a weight no one else could see.

But he was also hiding something.

Something enormous.

I turned back toward Sarah.

“My nephew?” I whispered.

My voice barely sounded like my own.

“Are you telling me that child is my sister’s son?”

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

She nodded weakly.

“His name is Noah.”

The name hit me strangely.

A name I had never heard.

A child I never knew existed.

A family member my father had erased from my life before I even knew I had lost him.

“Where is Amelia?” I asked.

The question came out sharper than I intended.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“She’s gone.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.”

My father told me Amelia left Chicago.

He told everyone she wanted a different life.

That she ran away.

That she didn’t want anything to do with the Sterling family.

For twenty years, I believed my older sister abandoned us.

I hated her for it.

I hated someone who had never even been given the chance to explain.

Sarah looked at me with sadness.

“Your father made sure everyone believed that story.”

My hands tightened around the edge of the bed.

“What does that mean?”

Before she could answer, the ICU door opened.

David stepped inside.

The moment he saw my expression, he stopped.

He knew.

He knew Sarah had told me.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then David slowly placed Noah into the portable crib beside the bed.

“I wanted to tell you.”

His voice was quiet.

“I swear I did.”

I stared at him.

“You worked in my building. You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“And you never said anything?”

David looked down.

“Because people like your family don’t listen to people like me.”

The words hurt because some part of me knew they were true.

“Explain everything.”

David took a deep breath.

“My wife, Sarah, worked at Skyline Summit Towers four years ago. She wasn’t an employee of your company. She was hired through a subcontractor during the basement renovation.”

“The flooding.”

He nodded.

“She was there when the chemical leak happened.”

I remembered the report.

A small accident.

A contained situation.

No serious injuries.

That was what my executives told me.

A lie.

“She was pregnant at the time,” David continued.

My stomach dropped.

“Pregnant?”

He nodded.

“With Amelia’s baby.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

David swallowed.

“My wife knew your sister.”

I felt the room tilt.

“How?”

“They worked together.”

He paused.

“Amelia wasn’t running away from your family, Ms. Sterling. She was investigating them.”

The words landed like a punch.

“Investigating?”

David looked toward Sarah.

“She found out your father was hiding safety violations at several properties. She discovered workers were being exposed to dangerous conditions and paid off to stay silent.”

My mind flashed back to my childhood.

My father sitting at the dinner table.

His cold voice.

“Business isn’t about feelings, Victoria.”

“People are numbers.”

“Never let emotions weaken your decisions.”

I had spent my whole life believing those words made him powerful.

Now I wondered if they were just excuses.

“What happened to Amelia?”

David hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me more than the answer.

“She was going to expose everything.”

The room became silent.

“Your father found out.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“No.”

David looked directly into my eyes.

“He threatened her.”

My hands started shaking.

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

He pointed toward the hallway.

“Your company erased medical records. They forced workers to sign papers. They paid people to disappear. Do you really think your father stopped there?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because deep down…

I already knew.

My father didn’t build an empire by being kind.

He built it by making sure nobody stood in his way.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

Rachel.

I stepped away from the bed and answered.

“Tell me you found something.”

There was silence on the other end.

Then Rachel spoke.

“Ms. Sterling… I found the original Skyline Summit documents.”

My heart raced.

“And?”

“They were altered.”

“How?”

“The official report says there were no fatalities.”

She paused.

“But the original file says three workers died.”

I closed my eyes.

“Three?”

“Yes.”

My fingers went cold.

“Who were they?”

Rachel lowered her voice.

“One was a construction worker.”

“Another was a maintenance employee.”

“And the third…”

She stopped.

“Rachel.”

“Tell me.”

Her voice trembled.

“The third person was listed as Amelia Sterling.”

I nearly dropped the phone.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“She was there that night.”

My breathing became shallow.

“She died at Skyline Summit?”

“Yes.”

The truth I had spent my whole life avoiding finally stood in front of me.

My sister hadn’t abandoned me.

She hadn’t left.

She had been taken from me.

And my father had helped erase her existence.

I looked through the ICU window.

David was sitting beside Sarah, holding her hand.

Noah was sleeping peacefully.

A baby who should have grown up in the Sterling family mansion.

A baby who should have known his grandmother.

His aunt.

His inheritance.

Instead, he grew up in a tiny house with a father who worked nights cleaning the floors of the company that destroyed his mother’s life.

I walked back into the room.

“David.”

He looked up.

“Yes?”

“I need the truth.”

His expression hardened.

“You already know enough.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I know what my father did. I know what my company covered up.”

I stepped closer.

“But I need to know why you protected Noah.”

David looked at the child.

Then he whispered:

“Because Amelia saved my wife’s life.”

I froze.

“What?”

“When the chemical leak happened, everyone ran.”

“Everyone.”

“But Amelia went back inside.”

“She found Sarah unconscious and carried her out.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“My sister saved her?”

David nodded.

“She knew the truth was dangerous. She knew your father would come after her.”

He looked at me.

“Before she died, she made Sarah promise one thing.”

“What?”

David’s voice broke.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me… protect my son. Don’t let my father turn him into another secret.’”

The words destroyed me.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father didn’t just steal a company.

He stole a life.

He stole my sister.

He stole a child’s identity.

And now I knew something else.

The man who taught me that emotions were weaknesses had spent years hiding the biggest weakness of all.

The truth.

At that moment, Rachel called again.

I answered immediately.

“Ms. Sterling…”

Her voice sounded terrified.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.”

“What?”

“I checked the old board records.”

“And?”

“Your father wasn’t acting alone.”

I stopped breathing.

“Who else was involved?”

A long pause followed.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Someone who still works inside Sterling Real Estate.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Rachel hesitated.

Then she said the name that made my entire body go numb.

“Victoria…”

“It’s your own brother.”
